CPC Exam Preparation

tinyurl.com My name is Laureen Jandroep (CPC) and I’ve been teaching and coaching medical coders to prepare to be certified coders for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) physician based board exams since 1999. I have taken and passed many of the board exams including: CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P, CCS, RCC and OTR. I started my career in medical coding when I ran my own successful rehab practice in New Jersey that at it’s zenith served over 17 long term care facilities with 26 therapists, aides and support staff. My company was approved by Medicare and billed over $1.6 Million annually with less than a .06% rejection rate — unheard of in the rehab industry. The reason for this success was making sure my company billed based on source documentation and provided ongoing training to my therapists regarding proper coding. So believe me- I know about coding! I have a unique way of teaching myself new concepts and I share that with my students. So they "get it". As fast as possible. Because medical coding demands that we stay current on changes in medical coding billing. So let me tell you…

AAPC or AHIMA Certification

AAPC or AHIMA Certification www.codingcertification.org Click here to get more cpc exam tips, coding certification training, and ceu credits. Question: "Hi, I have an associate’s degree for coding and billing but haven’t worked for the past two years and am looking to get certified. My question is this: What is the best certification to get, which one is preferred by companies, CPC or CTA?" Basically, what I jotted down here is hospitals tend to prefer the AHIMA credentials… Physician’s offices, tend to prefer the AAPC credential but mainly I find physician’s offices – they just want to know that you are certified. So if you have a CPC or the CPST which is the Credential compared to AAPC, they are normally satisfied with that. The other thing you want to consider as far as which one is preferred is look in your local classified. What are the want ads asking for? Do you see more of one than the other? Location: If you are in a big city like Philadelphia, New York City, there are a lot of hospitals, so there might be more jobs in the hospital setting versus in a rural area like me, there isn’t, there are only two main hospitals. So you are probably going to have a better chance landing job as a new coder in a physician’s office. And of course, what do you like? Can you picture yourself working in a large hospital type environment like a little more kinda rank and file almost like military grades and things like that. I also had on the slide AHIMA vs. AAPC comparison grid <b>…</b>

Medical Terminology on CPC Exam

CPC Exam Questions www.codingcertification.org Click here to get more cpc exam tips, coding certification training, and ceu credits. Medical terminology on the CPC exam. This is one Alicia was going to answer so I will try to do my best here. What type of medical terminology would be on the test? Basically you can be asked any medical terminology question possible, so, its advisable to take a medical terminology course especially with ICD-10 coming up which is going to require you to have a lot more anatomy understanding that ICD-9. If you need a course, we just happen to have one on medical terminology, anatomy for ICD-10 coding. So we chose that book because it’s the only one that I found with medical terminology and anatomy and for coders. So its currently selling for $48.72 if you want to do self study or if you want to do it with the instructor coaching you and all of that, take the course from us and you will get a certificate of completion and all that good stuff. I will highlight the medical terminology course later in the presentation…you know I will, right?! This is another book Alicia was recommending and I recommend too that is heavy in terminology review for the CPC exam and that’s Carol Buck’s CPC coding exam review, called the certification step. It sells on Amazon for about $50. Here is a sample question: This term means the surgical removal of the fallopian tube. Ligation, hysterectomy, salpingostomy, salpingostomy. So, which do you think it is? Lets do <b>…</b>

CPC Certification- What’s On The CPC Exam?

CPC Certification www.codingcertification.org Get more cpc exam tips, medical coding training and CEU credits. CPC Certification- What is on the CPC exam? This gives you all of the topics that are covered in the 5 hour and 40 minute exam. So definitely go there and some other good tabs to look at – approved manuals, this question comes in a lot, not all coding manuals are approved so be careful, check it against this web. Due to the advantages of additional information and/or ease of use, the following books cannot be used…so that’s the expert so be careful of that. So check that out. Also, I did a blog post called CPT exam layout and CPT exam tips that I wanted to show you so if you go to coding certification.org on the sidebar there’s a search box that you can use to find, say Laureen and Alicia put in a post on this, that’s a good place to start and here is the little search box here. …more in the video . How to study for the CPC exam paper? More important tips to help …

A strategy that has been adopted by many, it might work out better for you to start answering the questions from back to front. Start the CPC exam paper from the end to the front may work for you because the questions are generally more advanced at the end, while the front questions are somewhat simpler. Therefore you may not need to spend as much time on the front questions.

Also, do not worry if you’re unsure of the answers to some questions. Just skip those questions and mark them. You can come back to them later. Work on those that you are sure of, as there is a higher chance of you getting more questions correct this way, and you can be sure that you’ve got time to cover every question. After you have gone through the whole paper, return to those marked questions to work on them. If you are really running out of time, just pick an answer randomly, this way you will at least have a chance of choosing the correct answer as opposed to leaving the question blank.

Confirm and check out the CPC examination venue beforehand if possible. This will help you feel prepared and less stressed out on the actual CPC exam date. Confirm the examination venue on the website, and always arrive early just in case. This is very important as you may be forbidden from taking the CPC exam if you are late.

On the day of the CPC exam, take a breakfast rich in protein and low in greasy fat. Take some carbohydrates too. Two half-boiled or poached eggs taken with some toast would be perfect. Taking a glass of milk would be good too as it is full of protein and natural sugars and vitamins that will nourish you, your brain and your body. Refrain from eating fried or oily food for breakfast as you may feel sluggish later. Never ever sit for your CPC exam with an empty stomach. That is the biggest mistake anyone can make as you are not operating with your full potential with low blood sugar and an empty stomach. Remember, this CPC exam is 5 and a half hours long. It’s a long time to fast.

Things to bring along to the CPC exam:

Bring along a bottle of water with you into the CPC exam venue. You will need water for optimal function of your body and brain. Also, bring a watch with you to keep track of the time. Plan your time accordingly. For example, 2 and a half hours into the test, you should be halfway through the questions. Lastly, bring along a jacket or sweater to keep you warm and comfortable if needed during the test.
