Getting Medical Freight Prepared In The Summer

Shipping medical freight with your trucking service in the summer is actually substantially different than shipping in the winter. Although medical material needs to be protected at all times, as it is very valuable and the health of patients may depend on it, in the summer, it is exposed to a much greater risk than any it faces when being shipped in the winter. This is the heat that is present outdoors throughout much of the country in the summer months.

The reason heat is so dangerous to medical cargo is because most medical material is biological. Anything that is biological such as blood, tissue, or organs is extremely vulnerable to heat. These types of materials are measured in terms of their half life, which is used to describe how long it can last before it breaks down completely. That half life gets drastically reduced when the material is heated.

When you are preparing medical freight in the summer months, half the battle is in the packaging. This is because you can be assured that the courier company that you ship any medical goods with should have all the proper equipment to maintain the right temperature for your goods once they are in the vehicle. Therefore, the time that you are chiefly worried about your products is when they are being loaded in or out of a vehicle, or how they should fare if the vehicles refrigeration systems were to fail. All of these situations are covered mostly by the packaging of the cargo.

The primary characteristic of the packaging of medical material needs to be its insulation. This type of material needs to be extremely well insulated. This will ensure that all the material that is on the inside of the package stays at the exact optimal temperature for prolonging its life while it is being moved between cold storage units.

While insulation is important, the ruggedness of the packaging is also important. It is important that the packing won’t crack, break or open easily when it is not supposed to. If a package suddenly fell open or cracked, all the insulation in the world won’t stop the hot air from the outside from quickly filling the inside of the container. When this happens, the material itself is warming up, and as soon as its temperature starts to rise, damage is being done. Pay attention to the packaging, and your deliveries should all go smoothly.

Hot Weather Shipping Of Medical Freight

When you’re shipping medical freight during hot weather, the trucking service that you’re using to move your medical material is going to be faced with many more challenges then they would be during a typical delivery. The added challenge is because of the threat which heat poses to most types of medical deliveries. Almost every type of material which can be classified as medical is in extreme danger if it becomes too warm for a prolonged period of time.

When shipping medical material in hot weather, every aspect of the delivery needs to be controlled as carefully as possible. The first thing which needs to be controlled is the initial storage. After that, the control should shift to the packaging of the item, followed by its transportation and final destination. The movement of the item between the various stages also needs to be considered to protect it as best as possible.

It is obvious that the goods will be stored in an appropriate facility at a medical facility. Therefore, the next step which needs to be carefully considered is the packaging of the item. Medical material being packaged for transit in hot weather needs two primary characteristics. It needs to be strong so it will not break or crack, and it needs to be well insulated so the products inside it will not warm up too quickly.

The next thing you need to consider is the movement of the goods into and out of their means of transportation. When it is hot out, every measure should be taken to ensure that this time period is as short as possible. This can be done by ensuring that all the areas which the cargo has to be carried through or clear, and that the vehicles are positioned as closely as possible. Some larger facilities will completely eliminate the risk posed by this situation by creating an air conditioned loading dock where cargo can be loaded in a temperature controlled environment.

Of course, the courier company and the vehicles that they are using need to be given some consideration as well. Although in order to be licensed to move medical material a courier will need to have certain types of equipment, it never hurts to double check. Asking a courier about their equipment, refrigeration, and the training of their drivers in monitoring medical material in transit can help ensure you that your deliveries are being properly looked after while they are in the care of the courier company.
