There are currently four accredited programs in the United States and one in Canada which are all very competitive. These programs accept only 16 or fewer students per year. The Accreditation body in the United States is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Some of the course contents ofmedical illustration are human anatomy, physiology, pathology, embryology and surgery. Medical illustrators should know the use of electronic media in surgical and conceptual illustration to storyboard creation, interactive media development, web design, animation, 3-D modeling, and prosthetics. A graduate degree program in this field is usually two years long.
