Providing a patient a HICF

Hello everyone,

I just recently got certified as a CPB and CPC so I am fairly new to this. I am trying to find out some information. Our clinic recently split into two and half of the clinic was purchased by another facility. This facility is not contracted or credentialed with any insurance companies. The services are Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, IV therapy, and Physiotherapy services. Patient are provided with a superbill with all information needed to bill their insurance company for reimbursement. The company who runs our EMR and billing program told us to just give each patient a HICF when they leave. I am concerned you shouldn’t just print a HICF and hand it to the patient. When I asked around at other offices they said they would never hand a patient a HICF but give the patient a superbill like we do. Does anyone have any information in this? I want to make sure we are providing out patients with the tools they need to bill their insurance company.

Thanks in advance for any information you can offer,
