Wait Time Affects Providers’ Ratings

Recent wait time research by Vitals, a consumer physician-choice service, indicates the amount of time patients cool their heels in your waiting room is the most important factor in their overall experience at a doctor’s office. The overall wait time appears to affect a physician’s rating on Vitals’ database. Physicians with five stars had a 13 minute, 17 second […]

Medical Ratings: Check Before You Choose

Choosing a doctor is never an easy task. You need to know that you will get the best possible care from a professional you can trust. Before you choose a doctor, take the time to check his or her medical ratings. These scores give you insight into many aspects of the doctor’s bedside manner and level of professionalism. These scores will help you as you look at all of the important considerations you must make before choosing a doctor.

The Benefits of Scores

Medical ratings give you the opportunity to see what hundreds of patients from a particular facility or office have to say about a doctor’s care and bedside manner. When you are facing the need to choose a doctor, and do not have the benefit of getting personal referrals, these are a tremendous help. They also help for those situations where you need to find a doctor but do not want to ask your friends and family due to embarrassment over a condition you have.

Find a Reputable Website

For medical ratings to be helpful, they need to be accurate. Find a website that allows actual patients to review doctors. Consider looking for a site that allows the individuals to include some commentary about their experience. Reading some of these reviews will help you determine whether the doctor is a good fit for your personality and preferences. What one individual wants in a doctor may be different than what you want, and reading reviews will help you determine why the individual gave the doctor that particular rating.

Consider the Number of Reviews

When looking at scores, consider the number of reviews. If a doctor has just one or two reviews, and one of those is a poor score, his score is going to be unnaturally low, even if he is a good doctor. However, if the doctor has multiple scores, you can have a better feel for the level of care the doctor provides.

Keep an Open Mind

Remember that no doctor is going to please all of his patients all of the time. There is always going to be a patient who is unhappy with care. If you find a doctor with nearly perfect medical ratings, you have to wonder how accurate the website is. Keep an open mind when using these scoring systems, and remember that one or two negative scores is just par for the course in this profession.

Don’t Use Scores Alone

While these scores are a helpful tool in helping you choose a doctor, avoid the temptation to make your decision solely on them. Take the time to ask for personal recommendations from friends and family, and call the doctors to interview them yourself. These scores should be used as part of the whole when making a decision about your medical care.

When you find a website that is a good source for unbiased medical ratings, bookmark it for future use. This invaluable resource will help you make wise decisions every time you face the need to choose a doctor. Having the website handy will make your search much more simple next time the need arises.
