I recently completed an internet based, self-study course, in medical billing and coding, and I plan on attempting the CPC in April. However, my concern will be not being able to get employed afterwards. I started this because I was unable to get a job with my previous education. I have a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and sociology, a Master of Education in higher education administration, and I am writing my dissertation for my Doctor of Education in higher education, leadership, management, and policy. Although these degrees look wonderful hanging on my wall, I live in a start that does not fund higher education, and the job outlook is bleak. Therefore, I decided to look outside of higher education and find another field I like. So for, I enjoy the course work for medical coding; however, I am starting to think it will be difficult to find employment. I am considering also taking the CPCO or the CPMA, as I think the higher level credential may work better with my advanced education. Any thoughts on this? Pros or Cons? I know the lack of experience in medical coding is a hindrance, but I know I am able to read, retain, understand, and recall a lot of detailed information. Please give me some thoughts.
