The Medical Benefits Of Memory Foam Mattresses And Pillows

The struggle to get a decent night’s sleep is something many UK residents struggle with, a large number of people have either developed or aggravated a back complaint due to poor posture when sleeping which has lead to not only a difficulty to get comfortable but also spine and muscle pain in the morning after sleeping. Considering research has shown we have a much more productive day after a good night’s sleep then maybe it’s time we look at improving our beds to improve our work rate.

Memory foam or latex mattresses have been proven to help alleviate and prevent back trouble as it shapes itself to the contours of our bodies due to heat and pressure sensitive materials that adapt to the natural curve of our spine taking pressure away from common areas like our knees, hips and shoulders. With less pressure on key areas of our body people can get comfortable more easily and so gain more valuable sleep.

Because these mattresses are made of latex they are also non-allergenic so people with dust mite allergies can get a more comfortable and less disrupting sleep too. Some people though can find memory foam mattresses a bit warm as there is not much space around the body for air flow, if you find you are a warm sleeper then a memory foam mattress can make things worse.

Considering the price of memory foam mattresses you should try one out first or try purchasing a memory foam mattress topper, which is a thinner layer (typically 2 inches) of memory foam you can attach to the top of your existing mattress. If you find that in the summer months it gets too warm then you can easily remove the memory foam element to get a cooler night’s sleep as well as it not costing as much to purchase.

Memory foam pillows also exist which can help extend the spinal and muscular benefits to your head and neck also. These pillows can be quite dense and heavy but are made from the same shaping material memory foam mattresses are made from. Again they can be quite warm so you may find that if you are too warm in the summer that you might want to use regular pillows. Again memory foam latex pillows have benefits for allergy sufferers, especially since your head is closest to your pillows during sleep.

Memory foam mattresses and pillows have their benefits but since they are not everyone’s cup of tea with regards to temperature then you should try them out before spending lots of money on a mattress that will be too warm for you.

The Benefits Of Medical Alert Systems

Currently federal regulators are considering overhauling 911 emergency services to improve response times and efficiency. However, some individuals with elderly relatives that live alone have opted to take action on their own by purchasing a medical response system.

Medical attention within the first 90 minutes of a heart attack, stroke or a fall enhances the chances of recovery for the victim. With an average response time between 30 to 45 seconds, medical alert systems do their best to ensure emergency personnel arrive on the scene in speedy fashion.

Personal Emergency Response System (PERS): The Basics

Known as senior alarm systems among other names, PERS are devices allowing individuals to receive assistance in the event of an emergency. Medical alarm systems typically consist of two components:

Help Button: A wireless device that can be worn on the body as a pendant or wristband.

Communicator: The base unit of the system. This two-way device plugs into the user’s home telephone line.

In the event of an emergency, users can activate the system by pressing the button on their wireless device. An emergency dispatcher then responds to the call, directly speaking with the user via the two way speakerphone on the communicator. After determining the kind of help needed, the dispatcher has the option calling someone on the user’s emergency call list. This list typically includes up to three people who are available to assist the user if contacted by a dispatcher. In emergency situations or if verbal communications with the user cannot be established, the dispatcher will proceed to immediately contact paramedics.

A Sense of Security

Research shows medical alarm systems provide users and their families with a sense of security. But this sense is more than just a feeling, as one study found medical monitoring systems drastically reduced mortality rates and cut hospital use by nearly 60 percent.

Despite the benefits medical alarm systems provide to older adults, only 16 percent of seniors participating in the study had a PERS in their homes. With baby boomers expected to increase the elderly population to 54 million in 2020, a heightened awareness of the benefits medical alert devices offer could prolong the independence and well-being of many seniors to come.

Massage Therapy’s Medical Benefits Unrevealed

Most people would be forgiven for thinking massage and medicines are two words that would never go together. Medicine is considered a very serious practice with equally stringent measures to cure and also to prevent diseases while massage, by and large, is considered a leisurely activity in which one partakes after a long day of hard work to relax. Even in the scientific community it has not been widely accepted that massage therapy spa can be a standard of treatment owing to the fact that it’s one of those things that can be put under a microscope to be “scientifically proven”.

The truth is that massage has always been a part of medicine and it is actually one of the earliest known methods of healing and it wasn’t until in the last century that human faith largely shifted to chemical means of treating anything and everything. Ignoring the traditional forms of treatment and wholly accepting the new ones came at a great price as many people have and still do experience a great many side-effects as a result of treatment for even the simplest of ailments such as a backache. This is why there is a now another branch of treatment that is arising and is being greatly appreciated by millions of patients who have testified to its effectiveness. This is what is known as Medical massage therapy.

Medical massage therapy is a type of massage that is in many more ways than one similar to the traditional forms but has a few fundamental differences that make it well attributed for its intended purpose. Medical massage therapy is a much more result oriented form of massage that is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. For a patient to receive this kind of treatment they need a prescription from a doctor and the reason for this is that for massage therapists to claim to be treating someone, first and foremost they must be able to legally state what it is that they are treating. The prescription must come from a doctor as it is beyond a massage therapists practice to do this by himself.

In the history of massage, almost all types of massages are applicable in the field as most forms of massage can be therapeutic if applied by a well trained professional message therapist. This is because the ailments are not always limited to a specific part of the body and there can also be more than one form of massage that can be used to treat a particular ailment, for example, most massage techniques may be applied as back pain therapy and even a simple relaxation massage is quite useful in treating certain ailments that don’t have a physical nature such as stress.

The benefits of medical massage therapy have been testified to by many patients with some even claiming to have been cured from pains that have lasted for years prior to the treatment. Some of the more specific benefits are:
– The release of tight and sore muscles
– The release of nerves that have been put under pressure by other body tissues
– Used to reduce pain as well as inflammation
– Helps to reduce normal mental stress.

These are just a few of the benefits that can be most easily attested to but the actual list of benefits is much longer. The best thing about Medical massage therapy is that finally patients have a treatment that they can resort to without fear of complications and side-effects because only rarely will a massage, even when ineffective, aggravate patients conditions or present them with other problems.

What Are The Benefits Of Medical Scrubs?

Medical scrubs are used all over the world. What once started out as a uniform worn only by surgeons, has now become a staple of most members of the medical profession, but why? There are many benefits to medical scrubs which may not even have been contemplated. In order to reap these benefits, the first step is to ensure that you invest in good quality scrubs in order to guarantee they properly fulfill their purpose.

The main benefit which comes from wearing medical scrubs is that they immediately portray a clean environment. Scrubs look clean and fresh, allowing patients to feel safe and reassured as soon as they enter the hospital. The reason for this usually stems from the block colors and simple styles which have now been adapted to be more modern. However, they are also hugely beneficial in that they do not allow for dirt to hide, which can cause infections. In the event that they become dirtied, they can be easily changed and washed, or disposed of. Scrubs are specially designed to withstand the pressures of day to day hospital life. You can frequently wash them without the issue of them losing their natural shape or fading in color. This allows you to remain clean and sanitary throughout the day, but still remain looking professional.

Another benefit to scrubs is the immediate identification of someone working in the medical profession. Scrubs are globally recognizable as a medical staple, so as soon as you don that uniform, you are showing patients throughout the hospital that you are a professional. This is particularly helpful especially in a situation where you may be needed, as you will stand out from the crowd. This can save valuable time spent searching the hospital for a qualified professional to assist the individual in need of help.

Scrubs also allow hospitals to show a certain level of organization. The new wider range of colors available from online catalogs allow hospitals to completely color code different departments, in order to distinguish one from the other. This also gives a department a sense of team spirit and professionalism, as well as equality within the workforce. This is a fantastic advantage within the workplace, and has been adopted by hospitals all across the globe.

Thanks to the advancement of technology over the years, medical scrubs are now fully suited for the job at hand. Special fibers and fiber technology are employed in order to make scrubs comfortable to wear throughout the day. It is a well known fact that working in a hospital can be hard work. In order to remain cool and dry, scrubs now include moisture wicking technology to prevent the need for excessive changing. This also allows you to appear clean to patients and visitors. Along with this, many varieties of scrubs come with stain-resistant materials. Germs and bacteria find it harder to stick so fluids can be washed off with extreme ease. This also makes them less costly in the long run.

Over the years, medical scrubs have changed dramatically, making them perfectly suited for the jobs they need to perform. It is clear to see that these benefits have allowed scrubs to be tailor made and designed in order to suit the medical profession perfectly. So, if you are part of the medical profession, make sure your scrubs are up to scratch. You would be surprised about the difference a good quality set of scrubs can make.

Benefits And Perks Of Medical Jobs

Why would you want to work in the medical profession? Sure, doctors and surgeons make a lot of money, but not every medical job pays especially well. And the hours can be long, the work stressful, and it can be heartbreaking when you know a patient is not going to make it, or when a child is seriously ill. However, almost everyone who works a medical job wouldn’t trade it for anything, knowing as they do the rewards such a profession can bring.

As long as there are human beings, there will be sick people. Illness and disease are just natural parts of life. And so the world needs everyone in the medical industry-not just doctors and surgeons and nurses, but everyone who makes a contribution to patients’ well-beings, and to the smooth operation of medical facilities. And nowadays, there’s as much need for if not more need for medical professionals as there ever was, because there are more elderly people alive now than at any time in human history. Baby boomers are receiving social security, after all. And human lifespan is projected to keep on climbing; the day may soon arrive when the average life expectancy for a newborn is well over a hundred years old. What this means from a practical point of view is that medical careers will also offer incredible job security. And there will be plenty of job openings in this field for decades and decades to come. These jobs will offer flexible hours, great benefits (including great healthy insurance plans) and a choice in terms of where you want to live.

A medical career can also suit all kinds of personality types. If you are a shy, retiring type of person, you can get a job keeping and archiving medical records, preparing equipment for surgery, transcribing doctors’ notes, or working as a medical researcher in a lab. If you are a friendly sort of person who loves interacting with other people all day, then you’re also in luck. You can work as a doctor, nurse, rehab specialist, home health aide, or in many other positions as well. You will get to know your patients as individuals, come to share their medical struggles with them, and celebrate their recoveries and triumphs alongside them. The medical industry, after all, needs not only smart and talented people, but those with a good bedside manner.

Technology is also revolutionizing medicine, so if you like to be on the cutting edge of human invention, this would be a great field for you to enter. Before long, doctors will be using all kinds of computerized systems for diagnosing and treating patients: medical avatars, 3-D imaging programs, non-invasive explorations of a patient’s body, treatments at the genetic and molecular levels, and handheld lasers among them. Who knows what the next fifty years could bring? The day could come when a person’s disease can be zapped away in just a few minutes.

Cost Benefits of Medical Tourism Revealed

There is a good number of reasons that motivate Americans to go the medical tourism route and travel offshore to get health care, but the primary reason is to save money. To a lesser extent, they may get overseas sugary because the procedure they need is not available in the USA, or because they want to preserve their anonymity and wish to ensure their friends and neighbors back home do not know about their surgery, but the vast majority of American medical tourism patients do it for financial reasons.

According to the Medical Tourism Association, it is problematic to calculate precisely how much the savings would be to have health care performed abroad not because of the difficulty in learning how much the offshore treatment costs, but rather it is hard to pin down domestic doctors and hospitals about how much their fees would cost. Despite this challenge, we can state some comparison costs in round numbers, and these figures may be astonishing at times.

Dr. Michael D. Horowitz published a study in the journal of the Medical Tourism Association which included a comparison of the costs for a unilateral hip replacement operation between hospitals in India, Costa Rica and the United States. According to his figures, to have the surgery performed in the USA would carry a price tag of a minimum of $ 40,000. The same procedure done in India would cost $ 5,400 (all numbers are in US dollars) and to have the hip surgery done in Costa Rica would be priced at $ 6,600.

Of course, these numbers do not tell the complete story. First of all, there is the cost of travel from one’s home in the United States to India or Costa Rica. Most often the patient will not go alone but rather will take a companion along, so the price of those airline tickets should probably be doubled. Next, there are the costs of hotel accommodations, meals, travel insurance, etc.

Dr. Horowitz calculated the extra non-medical expenses for two Americans going to India at $ 4,600, and for Costa Rica it would be $ 3,250. This brings the total price for the India medical tourism care to be $ 10,000, or 75% less than American treatment. For Costa Rica, the total of $ 9,850 is 75.4% less than if the patient had stayed home.

The travel figures are based on the air flights being economy and not business class, and for flying from Atlanta to New Delhi, India, and San Jose, Costa Rica. Even if the patient had to miss a few extra days of work due to the extra time off needed for overseas travel, the savings of $ 30,00 or $ 30,150 are very significant.

One benefit upon which it is even harder to put a price tag is the life experience value of a trip to India. Surely the extra few hundred dollars it would cost to go from New Delhi to the Taj Mahal pale into insignificance when weighed against the opportunity to tick this wonder of the world off of one’s “bucket list” of things they are dreaming of doing.

Most travel agents are not trained to accommodate overseas surgery clients, so anyone wanting to arrange medical tourism is advised to have their procedure coordinated by an accredited specialist such as http://globalsurgerynetwork.com

Coordination of Benefits and Conservative Therapy Question

Hello!

We work in a vein/vascular practice and we have a patient who has UHC primary and Medicare 2ndary. UHC doesn’t require a 90 day conservative therapy trial of compression stockings but Medicare requires conservative therapy if the patient doesn’t meet certain criteria. This patient doesn’t meet that criteria. Which medical policy guidelines do we follow?

Many thanks!
