Electronic Medical Records – Most Doctors Say No

The Obama administration will be devoting billions of dollars to promote electronic medical records (EMR) for doctors. Today, EMR vendors run in and out of doctors’ offices trying to hawk their software. Each one claims to be the holy grail of electronic records. I admit that the concept seems intoxicating.

The promise of a paperless office is certainly seductive. The notion of physicians and patients having access to their medical records from any computer would improve medical quality and efficiency. Every doctor knows how frustrating it is to see a patient in the emergency room when the relevant medical records are sitting in the primary doctor’s office or in a hospital across town. Conversely, EMR permits the primary physician, who may not have been the hospital treating physician, to be easily updated after hospital discharge when the patient returns to his office. Many patients I see today in my office don’t know their medications and can’t recall prior illnesses or even operations. EMR solves this issue.

EMR also permits easy analysis of patient data to track important medical benchmarks including colon cancer screening, Pap smears, immunizations, mammograms and other preventative tests. Doctors like me who still use paper, rely on old fashioned methods to track who is due for a screening colonoscopy. EMR technology could permit our office to contact all patients who reach the milestone age of 50 alerting them that their colon cancer screening experience is beckoning. This would be superior to our current manual mail & call technique. EMR also eliminates the frustration of a missing medical chart. Electronic files are also more current, since data is entered much faster than paper reports. Sending medical records to other physicians’ offices could be accomplished with a keystroke, which traditionally can take weeks. EMR also eliminates the inscrutable penmanship of physicians, which at times needed CIA code breakers to decipher.

With EMR, patients could have their complete medical data, including EKGs and actual x-ray images on a personal flash key. With this technology, a doctor on a cruise ship could see your chest x-ray from 2 weeks ago.

Over time, EMR saves money by improving office efficiency, reducing repeating medical tests and reducing postage expenses.

If this system promises physicians a medical utopia, then why doesn’t every doctor sign up? The New England Journal of Medicine reported in their April 16, 2009 issue only 17% of physicians is using some degree of EMR in their offices. Hospitals are much further behind in acquiring these systems. Chances are that your physician hasn’t pulled the EMR trigger yet either.

Drop Out of Work or School with Fake Medical Doctors Excuse

What will you do if you want to drop out of work or school? It is really difficult in the past. However, now you can find the way to miss work or school only with a fake doctor’s sick note on the Internet. How it is?
Let’s say you’re unsure of what the template for an authentic hospital excuse looks like. No problem. Simply scour the Worldwide Web to find the excuse that most suits your needs. You can take your pick from the many samples of doctor’s excuses that are available for print.

For example, let’s say you’ve called in sick at work but really cannot be bothered to make a trip to a clinic. Don’t fret. You can find a copy of the medical certification template that you’ll need to validate your absence from work. All you need to do is find the sick note that looks authentic to you, download it and then, simply press print. You could even store the details of the physician and clinic on your fake doctor’s excuse for use at a later date.

It doesn’t matter if the excuse you need is for yourself or the children’s principal. There really is nothing easier than filling in the online form with your details (usually in the space reserved for the details of the patient) and printing it out. Then again, you’ll have to be sure not to slip up as many people often do.

Even if everything looks correct, do double and triple check the medical release you’ve printed out, as the slightest mistake or inconsistency can land you in a heap of trouble. So, be smart and spend some time looking for the note that looks the most authentic to you, while ensuring that it corroborates your story. And before you know it, you’ll relish staying home from work.

Medical Assistants – Helping Doctors Everyday

Medical assistants or in simpler terms the clerical staff of medical institutions and centers are individuals who provide assistants in terms of running varying routine office related tasks at hospitals  including patient registration and admission, answering telephone calls, coordinate laboratory tasks, bill management etc. In some cases they may also perform some procedures such as run simple tests, carry out x-rays and provide medication to patients.

Job demand in the health sector is expected to increase in the coming years. An increasing number of the population of elders in the Australian workforce means hospitals will soon have to induct more people in their staff in the years to come to fill in the jobs vacated by the elders in their workforce. This will lead to an increased number of hiring in the coming years and hence more jobs.

Therefore, a formal training and the right kind of attitude will transcend into a respectable job for individuals pursuing or studying for a career down that line. So how do you decide on what to do. There is more than one way to obtain qualification in medical assistance. One can either obtain a diploma which is of a shorter duration or get enrolled in an associate program of any listed school or institution. Vocational training in this area is important for obtaining a license, however it may also be noted that a license is not necessarily the requirement in all places but having a license is obviously a definite plus.

The choice between the two depends on one’s personal preference plus the personal circumstances and that may include considering aspects such as career path, relocation for school, life stage etc. For instance, if you’re supporting a family, getting enrolled in a full time degree program may not be the option. Then there are online programs being offered as well that too can be considered. Leading schools across the country and internationally are offering online courses for two years associate degree in medical assisting. These may include subjects like accounting, business, office management, project management, medical billing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, computer, networking etc.

Anyone wanting to pursue a career in this area may want to get a feel of the field first to assess whether this is the right area for you. This can easily be done by working as a volunteer in any medical center. Once done with that, look at what program you want to choose from among the many mentioned earlier in the article, followed by the kind of degree you want, and there you go…your very own medical assisting degree is right there in your hand.

Healthcare IT – Doctors as Technologists

Do you see yourself as a technologist? You’re already a card-carrying scientist, surrounded by the tools of your trade; scales, centrifuges, and the age-old sphygmomanometer. The thing is, you need help to do more and more work with less and less time. Technology is the way you can get the assistance you need.

iHealthcare

A trip to the doctor’s office can be rife with healthcare IT. It begins with the process of making or changing an appointment. Increasingly patients avail themselves of clinic websites where they can leave a message for a nurse, request a prescription refill, and make or change their appointment. Or patients can call a HIPAA-compliant 24/7 hotline to perform these activities at any time.

Doctors are increasingly offering patients the option of video conference visits for certain situations, such as monthly or quarterly prescription checks. This doesn’t only save your time and patient time, it also provides a way to prevent patients from exposing themselves to healthcare associated infections. Along the same vein, patients who do come into the office may be met with a sign-in solution that’s designed to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses.

Meanwhile, laptops and tablets in every patient room provide easy access to patient information, current prescriptions, and test results. All of this data takes up server space and ultimately needs to be shareable, in particular, to prevent multiple layers of data entry which exponentially increases the potential for error. Thus, the cloud storage solution is a significant purchase in healthcare IT. Data security and HIPAA compliance loom large in this buying decision.

The App and I

Gamification entered the healthcare arena years ago. This is the process of using weight loss apps and fitness trackers to monitor goals and provide incentives to patients. The apps collect data that enables doctors to work with patients on dietary and fitness goals by letting the facts do the talking.

This year, to step things up a notch, the American Diabetes Association of Illinois issued the Venture to Stop Diabetes Challenge. The campaign with its $ 10,000 prize is a call to “develop new strategies and technology that address the problems facing the diabetes community.” With many exciting entries, the final six were invited to present in Chicago. In addition to using apps and gamification as part of a program, some companies introduced entirely new takes on device-enabled diabetes management, such as:

  • Integrating a blood glucose meter with a smartphone
  • Combining an activity tracker with a glucometer and wireless blood pressure monitor
  • Creating an artificial pancreas system that delivers insulin to the body

These types of technologies, when adopted by patients, provide healthcare professionals with ever more powerful ways to combat nutrition-related illnesses and diseases.

I Robot?

Robots in the office can’t be far behind — and we’re not just talking about telesurgery, which was once the realm of only the best-funded hospitals. Think smaller. Think…Tickle Me Elmo, except somewhat more expensive. The MEDi Robot with a price point of $ 15,000 helps to distract kids during inoculations. Think back to the child who required three nurses and both parents to hold him down for a shot. You might give this kid-sized ‘bot a nod once the cost gets below $ 1,000.

Last year, with the expectation that the U.S. might “face a 65,000 shortage of primary-care physicians by 2025,” healthcare robots were seen as a necessary part of healthcare technology. Rolling robots in hospitals started their rounds, assisting with in-patient checks like a video conference on steroids. One such device at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center “can navigate itself between patient bedsides…and swivel its screen 170 degrees, allowing it to turn and face multiple people in the same room.”

That was a camera and screen on wheels. This year we met Sophia, designed to serve in health care, therapy, education, and customer service jobs. She’s just in the prototype stage at this point but already boasts 60 facial expressions.

Whether we’ll come to rely on a battalion of Sophias in the future remains to be seen, but for right now you know how much work is on your plate, and whether your staff is over-extended. Let a virtual medical receptionist handle your phones, so you and your team can focus on the terrified toddler in room three. As health technology continues to expand, so will its processes and solutions making it easier for doctors and patients alike.

What technology are you using in your medical practice? Tell us about it in the comments below.
