Does your facility continue to struggle with injections and infusions coding?

By Steven Andrews

Despite few recent code or rule changes in recent years, coders and HIM managers I hear from through emails and at industry events almost always mention concerns about accurately documenting and reporting drug administration services.

The services are often performed in different hospitals departments on a variety of types of patients.  Revenue integrity relies on orders, nurse documentation, correctly applying coding concepts, and capturing charges based on documentation.

If you continue to struggle with accurately reporting these services, join HCPro for our annual 90-minute webcast for a comprehensive review of the revenue integrity concepts applicable to drug administration services, including tips on medication administration record (MAR) documentation, and for capturing charges.

During this program, expert speakers Jugna Shah, MPH, and Valerie A. Rinkle, MPA, will cover frequently raised questions and discuss the impact of OPPS packaging on drug administration overall payments, the importance of reviewing your MAC’s local coverage determination guidance, and hot audit topics.

The webcast will take place Friday, January 29, from 1-2:30 p.m. (Eastern). For more information, click here.

2 day infusions

We have a patient that was receiving Rituxan infusion and because of a reaction and other health issues, we had to infuse slower and were unable to complete the infusion same day. The doctor ordered the patient to come back the following day to finish the infusion. Has anyone else had this situation? How would I bill for the 2nd infusion day? As the additional hours (96415) only?

charting infusions

I am having an issue with the nursing staff at my clinic about how to properly chart infusions. we do not use electronic records, but rather chart on a paper form. can anybody either direct me to a website that specifically illustrates written charting of administration of IV infusions or send me an email attachment showing an example of proper charting? I have been all over the internet and am having an awful time. My email is: [email protected]; my phone number is:505-242-7512. I would appreciate any help any one can offer – I would even be willing to come to someone’s office to get one on one instruction. THANK YOU! Susan Duda

59 Modifier with Infusions

Hello everyone,

When we code for infusions/injections along with an invasive procedure or say, CT with contrast, we do need to append 59 Modifier with the main Infusion/ Injection code (96365/96374).

However, should we also append the 59 to the add on codes?? Like if multiple infusions were done on the same day and 96366 was also coded, do we append the 59 to this code?

Please help!

Infusions and injections

i have a question in regards to the rules of charging for injection pushes during the infusion times of antibiotics. I know that if the infusion is for hydration and the injection of the push is during that infusion then we carve out the 15 minutes from the hydration for that one push, but what if that infusion was not hydration but instead an antibiotic, do we still carve out the 15 minutes of that antibiotic infusion for that one IV push?
