new to billing inpatient claims for behavioral health hospitalists

Dear colleagues: Hospitalist on rounds to see non-MCR patient for first time is called back later in the day for another different issue for the same patient. Initially, the first time the patient was seen was recorded as new patient, and 2nd time on this same day, doctor entered "established patient". It’s my understanding that both visits should be combined into ‘one service" to meet criteria, but just want to make sure the visit would go out as a NEW PATIENT visit. Initial visited coded as 99222 and subsequent same day followup as 99231 for different issue altogether.

I’m trying to find an authoritative document specifically outlining an issue such as this.

Hope someone can jump in with some advice!

Hospitalists performing visits at I/P psychiatric facility

We have a group of hospitalists (NPs) who perform medical evaluations (H&P) at an inpatient psychiatric facility. We are billing E/M codes 99221-99223 for the H&Ps and the psychiatrists are billing their psych codes. Our diagnoses are primarily medical. However, in a lot of cases the patient has no chronic illnesses therefore we have to use a mental health diagnosis. Both services are done on the same day. Is it appropriate for the hospitalists to bill 99221-99223? Or would it be more appropriate to bill a consult code? Please advise. If you can direct me to more information, that would be appreciated.

Home Health Cert (G0180) for Hospitalists

Hello all,

Can the Hospitalists who are filling the Home Health Cert paperwork out (assuming we have met all of the criteria) bill the G0180? We have used these codes from the office in wound care and geriatrics, but not from the hospital setting. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
