Pediatric Specialty Benchmarking

Hello,,

Can anyone who does pediatric specialty work share with me any good bench marking and auditing resources? The group I work with does pediatric: ortho, endo, hem/onc, GI, rheum, genetics, neurology, neurosurgery, developmental, psych, and pulm and are still growing in specialties. I’m used to working with adult medicine and being able to get resources easier than I am finding them on the peds side.

Thank you

Pediatric BMI for HEDIS coding

Our clinic just started coding BMI for every encounter as applicable for HEDIS standards. Our staff uses adult BMI calculations for all age groups. The pediatric BMI codes are for patients under 21. We have been using the measurements taken by staff to convert these erroneous adult BMIs into Pediatric percentiles so that we may apply the correct code.

My questions are:
Are we allowed to do this?
Will the staff need to start using Pediatric calculations for all patients under 21?
What about Asian BMI calculations?

From what I have researched, it seems we aren’t supposed to calculate BMI ourselves, even if the height/weight/ age are there.

All insight is appreciated, thanks!

Chronic Care codes in Pediatric coding and billing

I am a Coder and Biller at a pediatric Practice I have a question regarding CHRONIC CARE code 99358 for our Patients ( who are Complex care kids)
Here is my question:
Our complex care Patients if they come for WCC we bill once a year with Complex care code 99358 with their WCC as our Dr are reviewing their Charts before they come and managing their whole health.

So I put age based WCC with 25 Mod and 99358 code if the review time is 30-74 min on a complex care Patient.

My question is ANTHEM doesn’t pay 99358 code so as discussed with you and my manager we add 99213/99214 ( whatever level) with their WCC code
to get paid on Chronic/complex care kids.

Please advise is that right? as one of our Pt mom complain that when they are bringing their child for WCC why do they have to pay a copay as we billed WCC and E/M code ( instead of 99358) to Anthem. What should we do in these scenario.

Pediatric hematology/ onc

Hello,
I am looking for resources for pediatric hematology and oncology. I have physicians who are billing for chemo on the same day as E/M. They are under the impression that they can bill level 4/5 visit since they are monitoring the patient for toxicity and deciding if they should proceed with the chemo. I am telling them they can’t bill an E/M and chemo on the same day unless the patient has a new issue. Since the patient is coming in for chemo, the workup prior to the chemo is included. I would appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

By Cindy Hughes, CPC, CFPC In the first years of life, preventive services play an important role in determining if a child is growing and developing as expected.
